Renaissance Leadership: #4 Renaissance Leaders Have Grit and Self-Command

The true definition of willpower is the ability to give yourself
a command and then follow it. No matter what.

GRIT is a major factor of all elite performers and Authentic Leaders; and it dovetails directly into Self-Command.

Let’s look at GRIT as an acronym.

Guts, Resilience, Integrity and Tenacity.

Grit is an acronym for Guts, Resilience, Integrity and Tenacity.
How much GRIT do you really have?

While the word guts may appear a raw and profane word, it’s visceral; and therefore, it wor

ks in this case.

To have guts is to have the courage to take action against all appearances and challenges.

To have the courage to take a stand for what you believe even if the entire world seems to be against you.

By the way, they’re not; and it’s not.

If the entire world seems to be against you. Stop. It’s not. It’s maybe
just a few small-thinking, competitive, victim-minded, and jealous individuals.
You’re more than that.

The “entire world” is nearly 8 billion people and most of them don’t even know you or know you exist.

Guts is the courage to think for yourself. I mean really think. Remember True Thinking is instantaneous and creative.

From Guts, Resilience is born.

Resilience is the ability to take hits, get knocked down, get back up, find a new strategy, and keep moving forward.

Resilience is not how hard you hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and still keep moving forward.

Resilience is the ability to fail forward. Implement a strategy and continue to come up with another when it doesn’t work.

For as long as it takes.

It ain’t about how hard you hit.
It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
~ Rocky Balboa

While Integrity doesn’t initially seem to be as “gritty” as Guts and Resilience. It’s the foundation upon which both these qualities are built.

Integrity is about being who you are. About never selling out. About not giving up on yourself. Integrity is about being fully integrated, whole and complete versus fragmented and fractured.

Integrity is saying what you mean and meaning it. Saying what you’re going to do and doing it.

Integrity is about showing up. About being dependable and accountable.

Finally, Tenacity.

Tenacity is refusing to give up. NOT refusing to quit as many would suggest. Truth told; winners quit all the time.

“Strategic Quitting” is a strategy I teach my clients which encourages you to quit what’s not serving your purpose, so you have the space and time to work on what does serve your purpose.

The meme “winners never quit” is a nice attempt but totally wrong.
That means if you smoke and you quit, you’re a loser…
If you’re an alcoholic and you quit—loser…
If you’re 30 pounds overweight and quit eating junk-food—loser.
Winners quit ALL the time. They quit doing what they shouldn’t be doing
so they have the space, time and resources to do what they need to do.

When you have GRIT then you naturally have Self-Command.

Self-Command is a critical component of leadership. Learn more about it here.

Self-Command is the leadership quality that allows you to give yourself a command and then follow it. Also known as willpower.

Regardless of your pursuit. Be it business, financial, relational,
physical or spiritual, without willpower you have nothing.

Without willpower you’re nothing more than a leaf being blown this way and that by the winds of life.

Without Willpower and Self-Command you have nothing.
You’re just a leaf being blown by the experiences and winds of life this way and that.

The greatest promise you can ever keep is a promise to yourself. It’s your own test of personal integrity.

The greatest promise you’ll ever keep is a promise to yourself.
If you can’t keep promises to yourself how can you expect anyone else,
or even life itself, to take you seriously?
