If you’ve been reading me for any amount of time, you know by now that I strongly advocate a new definition of leadership.

I’ve had multiple so-called marketing people tell me that leadership was about tactics, management skills, team building and many other strategies that are the effects of great leadership.

Leadership, like success, is not about skills.

Leadership and success are not about skills, education, position or product.
While those things are present, they are the effects not the cause.

Leadership, authentic leadership, must begin with Self-Awareness. The understanding of who you are, why you’re here—also known as your purpose—and the willingness to commit yourself to that purpose fully and completely no matter what the cost.

Leadership wears the mantle of self-sacrifice. The willingness to sacrifice your own personal needs for a cause and calling far beyond your own comfort.

Authentic leaders are willing to sacrifice for a cause and calling
far beyond their own personal comforts and needs.

In many cases it’s easier to define leadership by what it’s not versus what it is.

Authentic Leadership is not:

• The number of followers. If this were the criterion then Justin Bieber would be a great leader in the world.
• The most popular. Social media influencers like Paris Hilton and the Kardashians would be great leaders if popularity was the criterion.
• Getting agreement. If you’re not making waves, you’re not making a difference. Therefore, you’re leading nothing but socialized and mob mentality.

If you’re not making waves, you’re most probably not making a difference.
And you’re definitely playing in the shallow end of the pool.

• It’s not title or position. This is positional power and quickly evaporates once the position is gone.
• It’s not fear and control. This only works when you feel you have something to lose. Once you reach the point where you no longer care about potential loss, the controller has no more control. Also, no ability to instill fear.

Many believe that leadership is garnered by title or position. 
This is not leadership. It’s just positional power and
it quickly evaporates once the position or title vacates.

Authentic Leadership is the ability to lead your own life first.

To be so crystal clear on who you are and why, that it doesn’t matter what the masses think or what the current results are.

The results are obtained by living the life you choose to live for yourself.

If you’re doing for the sake of some result than you’re not really doing.
And you’re certainly not being.

Every 20 minutes in our world someone commits suicide…

1 out of 6 American’s are addicted to anti-depressants…

1 out of 13 people in the world are abusing alcohol…

These individuals are certainly not leading their own life productively or successfully; and our so-called “leaders” continue to focus on the economy, power and control as the answer to our ills.

It’s time for new leadership…
